Firefighters raise nearly $2,000 for muscular dystrophy
Local firefighters and volunteers raised nearly $2,000 for muscular dystrophy last weekend.
John Evans, a firefighter with the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Department, said the funds were raised Friday through Monday as part of the Jerry Lewis Telethon.
Members of the International Association of Firefighters Local No. 1596 and the Fire & Medical department collected funds at various sites through "boot-blocks," in which donations were placed in rubber boots.
Also, several firefighters and volunteers manned two telephone lines taking pledges during the telethon from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.
Lawrence telephone numbers were displayed to its viewers on area television stations, Evans said.
"The citizens have provided support for a nationwide effort to defeat diseases, which affect many in our community," he said.
Local firefighters have participated in the telethon for the last several years.
