Vifian finishes 37th: Lawrence's Marcel Vifian finished third on the American team and 37th overall at the International Triathlon Union world championships on Nov. 16 in Perth, Australia. Vifian's time was 1:53:27. The overall winner was Chris McCormack of Australia with a time of 1:48:29.

Three bicycle champs: Three Lawrence riders were overall champions in the 12-race Missouri Fat Tire bicycle series. Jenny Clark won the sport women ages 30 & over division, Stacey Lamer captured sport women 29 & under category and Larry Spray came out on top in masters men competition.

  • Heitzman sets record: Paul Heitzman of Eudora won the ages 65-69 division at the Turkey Trot 10-Mile race last Saturday in Wichita. The 66-year-old Heitzman was timed in 65:36, a state age group record. Heitzman was second overall in the age-graded Masters competition.

  • Lawrence bowler fifth: Russell Bedford of Lawrence finished fifth in the men's division of Kansas Merit bowling championships last weekend in Kansas City. Bedford recorded a score of 754 and won $450. Scott Foley of Kansas City won with a 794 and qualified for the nationals next month in Las Vegas.

  • Garcia to play in Germany: Lawrence High senior Adrian Garcia, an all-Sunflower League football selection and 1,000-yard rusher, will travel this summer to Germany where he'll play in the Frankfurt Friendhip Bowl. Garcia is raising $2,100 to fund the trip, set for June 17-24. Anyone interested in donating to his fund, call 838-9369.

  • Mills Records Hole-in-One: Ed Mills of Lawrence used an eight-iron to ace the 118-yard No. 6 hole at the Orchards Golf Course on Tuesday. Mills was in a foursome with John Hardister, Mac Hay and Lou Parsons.

  • DCABA search: The Douglas County Amateur Baseball Assn. is now taking applications for the positions of umpire coordinator and field maintenance coordinator. For more information call Dennis McBride at 749-7422.

  • Sport 2 Sport signups: Sport 2 Sport is now accepting registration for the Jan. 12-Mar. 6 winter session. Programs included the Roy Williams Basketball Club, the Danny Manning Basketball League, a roller hockey club and league, an indoor soccer club and league, a volleyball club, the Bob Drake Basketball Instruction Academy and the Dave Bingham Baseball Instruction Academy.
