As of today, McGrew Real Estate and Coldwell Banker Gill are known as Coldwell Banker McGrew Real Estate.

Effective today, McGrew Real Estate Inc. has formally affiliated with Coldwell Banker and merged with the local Coldwell Banker Gill agency.

The new business will be known as Coldwell Banker McGrew Real Estate.

The name change reflects the international identity of Coldwell Banker and the McGrew name, a real estate fixture in Lawrence for 46 years, said Gary Nuzum, president and managing broker of the company.

"It is the right time to combine the national presence and cutting-edge technology of Coldwell Banker with the solid, local heritage of McGrew Real Estate," Nuzum said.

One of Coldwell Banker's tools is that it offers a site on the World Wide Web (http://www.coldwellbankder.com) that contains more than 160,000 listing nationwide.

The merger increases McGrew's sales agents from 50 to 70. Sixteen sales agents are coming from Gill's former office at 901 Tenn. and four other agents are joining the staff, he said.

"It means more tools and services to buyers and sellers in Lawrence," Nuzum said. "That's why we're excited about Coldwell Banker."

Coldwell Banker McGrew, now at 1501 Kasold, is building a new headquarters at 4100 W. Sixth expected to be completed in February.

McGrew Real Estate was started by Conrad McGrew in 1951. His son, John McGrew, the company's current chief executive officer, took over in 1960. John McGrew's son, Mike McGrew, is vice chairman and is the 1998 president of the Kansas Association of Realtors.

Coldwell Banker Gill was the city's oldest agency. Before its affiliation with Coldwell Banker, Gill Real Estate was founded in 1924 by M.R. Gill. The company was formed by merging two existing agencies with roots dating to 1881.

Chris Barteldes, owner of Coldwell Banker Gill, will be an associate broker at the new company.

"I just think that overall it will be a plus for both parties. It's a win-win situation," Barteldes said.

The Gill office at 901 Tenn. is closing, but its office in Eudora will remain open under the new name.

Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corp., a subsidiary of HFS Inc., franchises more than 2,600 independently owned and operated real estate offices with more than 56,000 sales associates throughout North America.
