Police catch burglar in act
Lawrence police captured a man breaking into a car early Sunday -- and believe he had also just threatened another man with a gun.
Gilbert Thomas Walker, 23, Lawrence, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, auto burglary and criminal damage to property. There were also outstanding warrants on him for selling marijuana and for failure to appear in district court. Walker was in Douglas County Jail Monday on $7,500 bond.
Sgt. Susan Hadl, a Lawrence police spokeswoman, said a man matching Walker's description displayed a handgun and made shooting sounds with his voice as another man was walking his dog about 12:25 a.m. Sunday on East 12th Street. About 20 minutes later, police got a call that someone was breaking into a 1992 Toyota 4-Runner in the 700 block of Connecticut Street. Police chased the burglar and caught him in the 800 block of Connecticut. They recovered an unloaded .38 caliber revolver.
