Some government employees will have the day off today, in recognition of Veterans Day.

Postal employees get the day off. And banks will be closed.

But for the most part, it will be business as usual today around the city for Veterans Day.

Because Veterans Day is a federal holiday, no business or residential mail will be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, except for Express Mail, said Cheryl Bowman, administrative assistant to the postmaster.

Retail counters at the main downtown post office and the Jayhawk Station on 31st Street will also be closed for the holiday, she said.

Local banks also traditionally close their offices for the day because the Federal Reserve Bank is closed to honor the holiday.

"When the Federal Reserve is closed, the banking system is closed," said Bob Georgeson, president and chief executive officer of Douglas County Bank. "All the financial institutions will be closed."

However, automatic teller machines will be open, he said.

Haskell Indian Nations University, which is operated by the federal government, will observe the holiday, said Karen Fields, executive assistant to Haskell's president.

"There will be no classes. Haskell employees will get the day off," she said.

Kansas University and local public schools will be operating on their regular schedules.

Douglas County District Court employees have, in the past, had the day as a holiday, said Linda Koester-Vogelsang, court administrator. However, this year Administrative Judge Mike Malone decided to defer the holiday to the day after Christmas, she said.

"He thought that would be the best way to serve the public," Koester-Vogelsang said.

Lawrence City Manager Mike Wildgen said city employees will work today.

"Operations are normal, just like any other day," he said.

"County employees will be working. It's not a county holiday," said Craig Weinaug, Douglas County administrator.

Marguerite Carlson, executive director of Douglas County Senior Services, said the Senior Center will be open today and meals will be served as usual. She said veterans will be honored at the various meal sites.
