Southern Lawrence residents may have wondered what knocked out their electricity Tuesday morning.

The answer might surprise them -- a squirrel.

About 8 a.m. Tuesday, a squirrel got into KPL's Southwest Lawrence Substation at 31st and Iowa, said Robin Lampe, a KPL spokesperson.

Power was knocked out to 4,000 homes south of 25th Street, Lampe said.

The affected area was south of 25th Street into the rural area surrounding Lawrence. Homes in that area east of Kasold Drive and west of Louisiana Street were affected.

The majority of the homes regained power about 9:15 a.m., she said. Everyone else had their power restored by 10:15 a.m., she said.

"It's pretty typical for a squirrel to get into a substation," Lampe said. "A lot of times they will cause something to trip off. I assume the squirrel dies."
