The Ottawa school board will appeal a city commission decision denying a demolition permit for the old middle school.

The board on Monday night voted unanimously to appeal the decision, then unanimously approved the hiring of Lawrence attorney Todd Thompson to handle the matter.

The Ottawa City Commission on Oct. 15 voted to deny a demolition permit for the middle school -- part of which was built in 1917 and the rest in 1927 -- saying the school board didn't prove that there were no "feasible or prudent alternatives" to demolition.

The school board will file an appeal of the decision in Franklin County District Court.
