Deputy to return after accidental shooting
The Douglas County Sheriff's deputy who shot himself in the side and leg is recovering and plans to return to work in the next two weeks, Douglas County Sheriff Loren Anderson said Wednesday.
The deputy, whose name and age have not been released, has been with the sheriff's department three years.
About 2 p.m. Friday, he was working on firearms qualifications at the Fraternal Order of Police grounds, 700 E. 600 Diagonal Rd., when his 9mm service handgun went off. He was putting the gun back into its holster when it fired, sending a bullet through his right hip and thigh.
He was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released.
Anderson said a gun expert with the manufacturer of the unnamed brand of handgun would examine it for defects.
