— Authorities here are investigating an arson in which someone put two pieces of cloth or clothing on a roof of a business and set them on fire.

Police and firefighters about 2 a.m. Saturday were called to East Side Auto, an auto parts store at 412 E. Fourth, where the materials were found on the roof.

They were out when firefighters arrived, but one of the fires was hot enough to put a hole in the tar roof of the business, Tonganoxie Fire Chief Charlie Conrad said.

Damage was estimated at $500. There were no injuries.

The building is owned and operated by Pat Albert, president of the city's chamber of commerce.

Conrad said authorities weren't sure what motive the arsonist had.

"We don't know if it was just kids or not," he said. "But whatever it is, fires like this scare you.

"We've got an old downtown, and it could have been like the Lawrence fire," he said, referring to an incident in which Sunflower Bike Shop and two other buildings burned earlier this year in Lawrence.

No arrests have been made, but several people are being interviewed, he said.

Anyone who was in the area and saw anything strange is asked to call Tonganoxie police at (913) 845-2311.
