More than 1,000 riders and counting are set to participate in the 23rd annual Biking Across Kansas, a 470-mile transstate bicycle ride.
"Every year we seem to have more and more," said Norma Christie of Wichita, an organizer of the event.
As of Thursday, 1,028 riders had signed up for the event, which will begin June 7 at Kanorado, near the Kansas-Colorado border, Christie said. Last year, 993 riders participated.
Riders will travel to Colby and spend the night before separating into three different routes. Cyclists will reunite in Holton on June 13 before finishing the last leg of the ride to Atchison.
Most cyclists are from Kansas, but entries have been received from 29 other states and Canada, from as far away as New York and California.
The main goals of the event are to have fun, get some exercise and enjoy the beauty of Kansas, organizers said.
