State fire marshal
has cancer surgery
State Fire Marshal Gale Haag underwent cancer surgery Tuesday to remove a malignant growth on the back of his thigh.
Haag's doctor is confident she was successful in removing all of the cancer, officials from the Kansas State Fire Marshal's office said.
"My pace may be slower when I return to my office sometime in the next 30 days, but I'll be cancer-free," Haag said.
Haag was diagnosed with cancer in December. He has kept Gov. Bill Graves and the Kansas Fire Service Council updated on his condition and prognosis.
"I continue to have full confidence in my staff," he said. "When I am unavailable, work continues at a regular pace."
Haag said he wanted to thank everyone for their cards, letters flowers and prayers.
