March 13, 1997

In the wake of new information, Lawrence police plan to re-examine the night 15-year-old Desarae Hatley disappeared. Meanwhile, authorities have received no new information on 40-year-old Elvin Crist.

The investigation into the disappearance of a 15-year-old Lawrence girl has apparently yielded a new clue, but her whereabouts remained unknown Wednesday.

In a separate missing person investigation, Elvin Crist, 40, Lawrence, who has been gone from his family since mid-December, still has not returned.

Desarae Hatley, a sophomore at Lawrence High, was last seen Saturday, March 1, getting into a car on Massachusetts Street with an unidentified man. Teen-agers standing on the side of Massachusetts Street where Hatley was last seen reportedly knew of the man who was with her.

Her best friend dropped her off. The friend said Hatley had just met the man. She said his name was David, but several teen-agers referred to him as "Stevens." It was unknown whether that was his last name.

"From what I understood, he was (also) there Friday night and was trying to pick up a bunch of teen-age girls," said Hatley's mother, Ida Good. According to Hatley's friend, "He looked like he was 17 or 18 and could be older."

Hatley's friend was unable to pick the man out from police photos, Good said. Police planned to search for and question those standing on Massachusetts Street that night.

Lawrence police spokeswoman Sgt. Susan Hadl said detectives will be "going back through the night with a fine-tooth comb."

Good put posters up throughout town after Hatley failed to come home the morning of March 2.

"I've had a few phone calls on it but the leads just didn't pan out," Good said.

Hatley reportedly did not take extra clothes.

Hatley's 16 birthday was Wednesday. Good said her daughter was looking forward to her birthday, when her mother planned to purchase her a car.

"I don't think she left on her own," Good said. "She was looking forward to her birthday too much."

Hatley is 5-foot-9, 130 pounds, with short reddish-blond hair and hazel eyes. She was wearing light colored blue jeans, a black midriff top, a white button-down shirt, a black windbreaker with white stripes on it, and open-toed sandals. Hatley has a scar on her upper lip a half-inch long.

Crist has not had contact with his family since Dec. 10. Family members reported him missing Dec. 14.

"Detectives continue to generate new leads," Hadl said, but tips have been scarce.

Crist is described as 5-foot-10, 155 pounds, with blond hair and brown eyes. He wears glasses. Crist's gray 1992 Mazda B2200 pickup truck, Kansas license plate HCY 320, was taken.

Crist was known to frequent the Kansas City area.

Anyone with information about Hatley or Crist is asked to call Crime Stoppers, 843-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous; Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to Caller ID. A reward is available.
