A board member of the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen is asking for food donations for a community picnic on July 4.
L.I.N.K. will hold the special lunch from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 10th and Kentucky.
The picnic is for low-income residents, homeless, people who don't have anyone to share Independence Day with and others, said Pam Casagrande, board member for L.I.N.K.
"A lot of people come just for companionship," she said.
L.I.N.K., which normally does not provide meals on Fridays, is organizing the dinner because the local Salvation Army Church, which has meals on Fridays, will be closed, she said.
Needed food items include pasta or potato salad, cookies, watermelon, milk, hot dogs, hot dog rolls and relish trays.
A small number of volunteers to help with serving also is needed, she said. About 85 people were served at last year's July 4 meal.
