Jan Biles, Journal-World arts editor, won several awards in this year's National Federation of Press Women's Communications Contest. The awards were announced Saturday night at the annual NFPW convention in St. Paul, Minn.
Biles received first place for editing of lifestyle or entertainment pages (The Mag and the Sunday Living section); first place for editing of a lifestyle or entertainment section (The Mag); first place for editing of an infrequent section or supplement (the KU Edition's arts and entertainment section); and third place for page layout and design (The Mag and the Sunday Living section).
The awards were presented based on editorial organization and planning, design, editing, cohesiveness of coverage and power/appeal of editorial material. To be eligible for the national competition, entries must have received a first-place award on the state level.
Biles has been with the Journal-World since February 1995. She was promoted from copy editor to arts editor in June 1995. Prior to joining the Journal-World, she worked as an associate editor/writer at The Hutchinson News, feature editor/writer for the Pittsburg Morning Sun and news editor/writer at the Louisburg Herald.
