Services for James Douglas "JJ" Kinney, 21, Topeka, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Plymouth Congregational Church, Lawrence. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence.
Mr. Kinney died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at his home.
He was born Dec. 1, 1975, in Lawrence, the son of James Dean and Murtis Galloway-Kinney.
He was a 1995 graduate of Topeka High School. He was active in football, track and basketball, and was a founding member of a teen awareness club at school.
He attended Butler County Community College on a football scholarship and would have been a sophomore.
Survivors include a son, Shawntez James Kinney, Topeka; his father, Lawrence; his mother and stepfather, Donald Kinney, Topeka; three sisters, Rosa Rebecca Dean, Junction City, and Leighloni Galloway-Kinney and Melissa Kinney, both of Topeka; three foster brothers, Curtis Pitts, Clifton Foy and Austin Woods, all of Topeka; paternal grandparents, Murvin and Rebecca Dean, Lawrence; maternal grandparents, Frank and Josephine Galloway, Lawrence; and maternal great-grandmother, Lillie Clark, Lawrence.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
