A professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Kansas University has won the national 1997 Phi Beta Delta Faculty Award for contributions to international education.

George Woodyard, former KU dean of international studies, was lauded by Phi Beta Delta, the national honor society for international scholars.

His career in international education has spanned more than 30 years at KU.

"Dr. Woodyard has had a distinguished career both as an academic and an international administrator," said Hodgie Bricke, Midwest regional vice president for Phi Beta Delta and assistant director of international programs at KU.

As KU's first dean of international studies and programs, Woodyard established exchange agreements between KU and universities abroad. He helped to more than double the number of KU students studying abroad.

Woodyard founded and is editor of the Latin American Theatre Review. He received special awards in 1995 at international conferences in Venezuela and Argentina.
