A Lawrence woman learned why you shouldn't leave your car running while you go into a store -- someone might steal it.
Lawrence police said the woman reported that her 1995 red Pontiac Grand Am, with a cellular phone inside, was stolen about 6:10 p.m. Sunday at Walgreen Drug Store, 3421 W. Sixth.
Sgt. Susan Hadl, spokeswoman for the Lawrence Police Department, said the woman told police she had left the car unlocked and running while she went into the store. When she came out a few minutes later, the car was gone, Hadl said.
The car was valued at $11,000 and the phone at $250, police said.
Leaving a vehicle unattended with the keys in the ignition is a violation of the city's traffic ordinance, Hadl said. The ordinance applies to vehicles on public or private property, including parking lots and driveways, she said.
