A 71-year-old Lawrence woman was listed in serious condition at an area hospital after the horse she was riding fell, then rolled on top of her, authorities said.

Celia Miller of Lawrence was riding the horse about 6:10 p.m. Tuesday in an arena at the Triple J Arabian Horse Farm south of Lawrence when the animal fell.

"After the horse fell, she fell with it and when the horse rolled to get back up, it rolled on top of her," said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Blake McCall.

Miller sustained a serious head injury in the accident, authorities said.

She was taken by Life Star helicopter from the scene to the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., where she was listed in serious condition Tuesday night.

Miller was an experienced rider who was riding her own animal at the time, McCall said.

The horse arena, owned by Miller's daughter, is located about a mile and a half west of the junction of U.S. Highways 56 and 59.
