A 51-year-old Topeka man was killed after the van he was driving collided head-on with a semi-tractor trailer about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 56, near the Douglas-Osage county line.

Jack L. Dugan of Topeka died after the Ford van he was driving east on U.S. 56 went left of center and collided head on with a westbound semi being driven by Kevin J. Fry, 27, Burlingame, a Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher said.

Fry and a passenger in the semi were not injured, the KHP said.

Dugan was taken from the scene by Life Star helicopter to Stormont-Vail Medical Center in Topeka, where he was pronounced dead.

The KHP was investigating why Dugan's vehicle went left of center. An autopsy to determine if alcohol was involved was planned, the KHP said.

The accident happened about three miles east of Overbrook, which is located about 26 miles southwest of Lawrence in Osage County.
