Ottawa A beauty contest set for this weekend at Ottawa University will literally be crawling with contestants.
New Star Discovery, a Rockford, Ill., business, will hold a regional "Most Beautiful Baby Contest" Sunday at the student union.
For a $35 fee, parents can put their children on the road to a series of contests that ends with a top prize of a $10,000 savings bond. There are six age divisions, with genders competing separately.
Colleen Adams, spokeswoman for New Star Discovery, said the business created the contest about 10 years ago and since has expanded the competition to 16 Midwestern states.
"We're just now opening up in Kansas," she said.
Adams said the company was not an entertainment agency. The contest was the business' only venture, she said.
"This is our business, and it's the most fun business in the world," she said.
Winners of the regional contest will receive free entry to a state contest and a session with a photographer.
State winners compete in a national contest, with the top prize being the savings bond.
Registration for the contest begins at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, and competition starts at 4:15 p.m.
Judges from the company rate children on appearance and personality.
Adams said New Star Discovery contests have drawn as many as 137 contestants. The Ottawa contest is designed to draw far fewer, she said.
"We're there to show them who we are and what we do," she said.
