Why does West Junior High School's eighth-grade football have a traveling A and B squad? Why would the coach take the eighth-grade B squad to play Logan and leave the A squad behind?
West's athletic director, Steve Grant, said West has recently added more Olathe teams to its schedule because they are part of the Sunflower League. Rather than dropping Logan, a small school that has been on the West schedule for many years, Grant said he decided to play the game with the B team. The Kansas State High School Activities Assn. only allows seven games and Logan would have been West's eighth game. However, by splitting the team and using students who had not had an opportunity to play earlier, West could continue to compete with Logan. "This is the first time we've ever done that. And we'll probably do it again if we get the numbers of kids participating. I visited with the coaches and the kids were real excited to get a chance to play and to start the game," Grant said.
