The Lawrence High School marching band cleaned up Wednesday night at the third annual Capital City Marching Band Festival in Topeka.
Nine bands competed in the festival, held on the Washburn University campus and sponsored by the Washburn University music department. The bands received excellent or superior ratings.
Lawrence earned a superior rating for drum majors and a superior rating for overall performance. In addition, the band brought home the Trophy of Distinction for consistent superior ratings in marching maneuvers, musical performance, general effect and appearance. Only one trophy was awarded during the competition.
The marching Lions will participate in Saturday's Band Day festivities at Kansas University, which includes an 8:30 a.m. parade through downtown Lawrence. And band members will compete in the KU Marching Festival Oct. 26 at Memorial Stadium.
