Eudora -- The zoning classification for the land around the Eudora Nursing Center has been decided -- at least for this month.

The Eudora City Council voted 3-2 to leave land owned by the center, 1415 Maple, zoned for duplexes.

For the second straight month, neighbors of the Eudora Nursing Center asked for zoning that would not allow duplex housing.

"We have no objection to the legitimate expansion of the nursing home," said Floyd Watson, 1404 Fir, and spokesman for the neighbors. "General-usage duplexes affect the integrity of the neighborhood."

Council members Allen Morriss, Ron Conner and David Durkin voted for the duplex zoning; Barry Landon and Pat Dardis sided with the neighbors.

"I believe that setting a precedent for rezoning (without a request from the property owners) is bad," Conner said.

In other action, the council approved a cereal malt beverage license for C&S; Market, 1402 Church.

The proposal to institute a new system for water and electric meter readings was unanimously denied by the council.
