Oskaloosa Jefferson County authorities and Lawrence police have teamed in an attempt to track down a missing man.
Kevin G. Newman, 24, rural Oskaloosa, was reported missing Tuesday, four days after he was last seen leaving his girlfriend's residence in Lawrence.
"He has family in Oskaloosa, family in Lawrence. He hasn't contacted his girlfriend or any of his family members since he was last seen," said Rick Jones, Jefferson County sheriff's lieutenant.
Authorities said Newman left his girlfriend's residence, in the 3000 block of West Seventh, about 7:30 a.m. Nov. 15. He was driving a red 1987 Ford Ranger XLT pickup with large tires, silver accents and rebel flags on the rear window and tailgate.
Newman is 5-feet-10 and 185 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Authorities received a scare earlier this week, when Lawrence police discovered a man's body hanging from a tree near the Kansas River in North Lawrence. The body had not been identified Friday afternoon, but officials have determined that the man was not Newman.
Jones said that when Newman was last seen, he appeared to be in good spirits. Newman apparently had given no indication that he planned to leave town.
"There's nothing really standing out where we could say for sure that foul play is involved," Jones said. "We just want to know where he is. If he was getting on the turnpike to go someplace, fine, let us know."
Authorities urged anyone who had seen Newman or the truck to call sheriff's officers at (913) 863-2351.
Jones said witnesses also could contact Lawrence police, who are helping sheriff's officers gather information. Lawrence police may be reached at 841-7210.
