Geeks on Wheels, an in-home computer consulting and trouble-shooting company, is expanding into Johnson County from its Lawrence base, the first of many company expansion areas.

Geeks, a division of The World Company, has been operating in Lawrence for the past seven months.

Geeks on Wheels provides consulting on a variety of PC problems. Hardware and software installation, training, trouble-shooting, installing memory chips, connecting peripheral devices and internal modems are among the most common requested services. Geeks also offers network consulting and assists business customers.

"There are thousands of people who want to have a smart friend come over and fix a small computer problem. We want to be that friend," said Dan Simons, director of new ventures for The World Company.

Its operations in Johnson County began last week. Simons said Geeks is in the process of expanding to 20 markets during the next nine months, including every Big 12 university community.

As the company expands, customers from across the country can call the toll-free number that connects callers to the Geeks headquarters in Lawrence. Geek employees will then dispatch a computer expert to the customer's home for service or consultation. Outside of Lawrence, Geeks work from their own home offices.

Simons said he plans to hire about 50 to 80 employees for the expansion.

Geeks charges $45 a hour for its in-home service calls. A Geek computer specialist can be reached at 1-888-Geek911, or by e-mail at geeks
