Lawrence police on Wednesday night were investigating a body found hanging from a tree near the Kansas River in North Lawrence.
Investigators said the male body, found in a wooded area west of the Kansas River Levee, may have been there for at least two weeks.
It was not immediately known if foul play or suicide was involved.
Officers were called to the area, located west of North First Street, at 6:13 p.m. by people who reportedly were looking for deer.
An identity or age of the body were not immediately known.
An investigator from the Douglas County Coroner's office was called to the scene.
Police were in the initial stages of the investigation Wednesday night.
The area where the body was found is not located near any streets, buildings or parking areas and it was not unusual that no one would have noticed it for quite some time, investigators said.
