Baldwin High senior basketball standout Mary Denning will sign with NCAA Div. II Pittsburg State on Tuesday, a day after the Bulldogs open practice.
"That was goal to get it done early," BHS coach Ted Zuzzio said. "Sometimes college recruiters come to games and the players get tight."
Zuzzio is a Pittsburg State graduate.
"I'm a Gorilla man," Zuzzio said. "I don't think that had any play in it, though."
Denning, a 6-foot-1 center, averaged 14.8 points and rebounds last season while leading the Bulldogs to a 22-4 record and the Class 4A state championship.
A four-year starter, a Frontier League and all-Class 4A pick as a junior, Denning shot 52 percent from the field (170 of 328) and blocked 91 shots last season.
In three 4A state tournament contests, Denning averaged 15.7 points to lead all Baldwin scorers. She had 14 points and blocked five shots in the Bulldogs' 44-34 victory over Sabetha.
Denning is one of four returning senior starters for Baldwin, the likely No. 1-ranked team in 4A when preseason polls are released next month.
Denning also was recruited by Emporia State and Washburn, two other NCAA Div. II programs
"It was a tough choice," Zuzzio said. "She attended scrimmages at all three schools."
