Lawrence may have a second taxi service running by next week.
Lawrence city commissioners last week unanimously approved a taxicab license for Masoud Jalali, who said he hoped to start the new business next week. It will be called Lawrence Taxi Service.
Currently, Lawrence has only one taxicab service, A-1 City Cab.
Jalali plans to start his business with two late-model Chevrolet Caprices and expand to three or more taxis as demand increases.
The taxi service will operate on a 24-hour radio dispatch basis, he said.
"It is our goal to have clean and comfortable vehicles with responsible and courteous drivers," he said in a letter to city commissioners.
Rates will be $5.50 per trip for one passenger within the city limits and 50 cents for each additional passenger; $3.50 per trip for 10 blocks or less; $1.40 per mile outside the city limits; and 30 cents per minute for waiting time after three minutes.
The number of the new business is 842-TAXI (8294).
