Lawrence area residents are invited to an open house Sunday at the Journal-World. Tours of the printing plant and facilities at 609 N.H. will be available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Journal-World newsroom staffers will be on hand to demonstrate the computerized news desks and the electronic photo desk and scanning operations.
Pressmen and platemakers will show the workings of the Journal-World's new 12-unit Urbanite press that prints the daily J-W and the 15-unit Urbanite that prints USA Today. The Journal-World also prints Kansas University's newspaper, the University Daily Kansan.
Members of the advertising staff will be on hand for tours of the advertising art and production areas.
Representatives from the business office and the circulation department will be available to answer questions, as will a staff member of World Geo Solutions, the company's geographic and demographic division.
A staff member of the Journal-World's Online Services will explain the workings of the J-W's electronic newspaper.
There will be refreshments and door prizes. Guests can register to win a six-month Journal-World subscription, a pair of tickets and a parking pass to a Kansas City Royals-Baltimore Orioles game, coffee mugs and KU souvenirs. There will be balloons for the youngsters.
