Two men who allegedly burglarized at least 10 vehicles overnight Thursday were arrested by Lawrence police early Friday morning.
Scott Michael Hattabaugh, 21, and Mark Jeffrey Somogye, 24, both of Lawrence, were arrested each on charges of auto burglary, felony theft and unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city.
The arrests were made after police supervisor Sgt. George Wheeler heard a noise like gunshots while on patrol on the west side of town, said Sgt. Susan Hadl, police representative.
Police investigated in the area and made a traffic stop in the 2100 block of Quail Creek, where the suspects were riding in a green pickup truck.
Items in the pickup bed included cellular telephones, a laptop computer, radar detectors, stereo equipment and a Bible.
Police discovered that the items had allegedly been taken from at least 10 vehicles, most of which were unlocked and parked on the west side of town, Hadl said.
The suspects also allegedly stole a .357 magnum handgun, which they each allegedly fired into the air, Hadl said.
Hattabaugh and Somogye were being held in the Douglas County Jail on $3,600 bond each.
Police were still investigating the incident on Friday, trying to determine if more vehicles were burglarized.
Anyone living west of Iowa whose vehicle was burglarized Thursday night or Friday morning should call police, 841-7210, about possibly recovering stolen property.
