The Lawrence Public Library reopens today after being closed for two days while workers applied bar codes to much of the library's collection.
The bar codes will be used in the library's new computerized catalog, which will go into operation May 21. Instead of searching through a card catalog, users will be able to search a computer database to find items from the library's collection of 210,000 books, magazines, compact discs and videos.
The bar coding won't be completed by May 21. But the library was closed Tuesday and Wednesday so staff could apply the codes to a large portion of the collection.
"It was an intensive, all-staff effort," said Bruce Flanders, the library's director. "We're tired. We've been working really hard on it."
The library, at 707 Vt., is open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and from 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.
