An unoccupied vehicle parked in an apartment complex was shot twice and a police officer was reportedly threatened during the commotion.

Two Lawrence men allegedly involved in a weekend apartment complex fight that ended in gunfire were charged on Monday in Douglas County District Court.

Anthony S. Wisdom, 19, 1218 Pa., was charged with assault and battery, both misdemeanors. Damien L. Shields, 20, 305 Ark., was charged with assault and obstruction of official duty, both misdemeanors. Shields was arrested for assault on a law enforcement officer after allegedly threatening an officer and urging acquaintances to gang up on him before reinforcements arrived, Sgt. Rick Nickell said.

Wisdom was out of Douglas County Jail Monday on $1,800 bond. Shields was in jail Monday afternoon on $250 bond.

Neither man was linked to the gunshots, which damaged a 1987 Ford Bronco in the parking lot. Bullets damaged the passenger window and passenger side door. The vehicle's owner, who was not involved in the dispute, told police he heard the commotion from his second-floor bedroom.

Police said Wisdom and Shields were two of several involved in fights that broke out at Graystone apartments, in the 400 and 500 blocks of Graystone, and Trailridge apartments, 2500 W. Sixth. Graystone is just west of Trailridge.

Separate bursts of gunfire were reported before and after police were called to the area. According to police reports, the shots came from an apartment in Trailridge. Nickell said Wisdom and Shields were visiting that apartment.

No serious injuries were reported to authorities.

About 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police were called to the apartments, where fights had erupted between two apartment parties. It was unclear Monday what started the dispute, as police sorted through details after rounding up several suspects and witnesses leaving the area.

"We have suspects; we're still investigating it," Nickell said. "We did recover a handgun and some ammunition in the area."

A .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun and several spent shell casings were found.

One year ago, Wisdom was shot in the leg at an apartment party in the 1400 block of Eddingham. A Lawrence man was later convicted for attempted voluntary manslaughter.
