After 53 years, Pur-O-Zone Inc. will move out of Lawrence and into Intech business park in Eudora.

"Our original hope was to expand here," controller Mark Elzea said. "We wanted to keep the building (at 714 Conn.), but then we got to looking at the city requirements and the setback requirements. It would just not be a reasonable cost."

The company, which produces and sells chemicals for sanitary maintenance, has been in Lawrence since 1942

Aside from the costs of expanding the Lawrence building, Elzea said there were anticipated objections from the East Lawrence Neighborhood Assn.

Over the 18-month search for a new location for the business, Elzea said Pur-O-Zone considered several areas for construction, including an East Hills Business Park location.

Pur-O-Zone will spend $1.5 million for the new building and equipment. The company is seeking industrial revenue bonds and a tax abatement from the city of Eudora to aid in the move. A public hearing on the project will be March 25 at the Eudora City Council.

In addition to purchasing new equipment and increasing the building space from 11,000 square feet to approximately 20,000 square feet, Elzea said Pur-O-Zone will add more employees.

"We know that in 10 to 15 years down the road we will be making more deliveries to Kansas City," Elzea said.

Pur-O-Zone employs 21 people and has plans to add five more when the company makes its move.
