Jock's Nitch Sporting Goods and Kansas Sports Club will soon become one store in the former Kansas Sports Club location at 837 Mass.

The two stores, which are owned by the same company, will combine their merchandise under one roof. The store's name will be Jock's Nitch.

"This way we'll service our customers better," said Will Walburn, manager of the two stores.

"The sports licensing market is so saturated, we felt it was time to combine both into one store so we could offer more to all people."

Kansas Sports Club opened about seven years ago when licensed sports clothing -- such as clothing with professional athletic team emblems -- was in great demand. Now, as the competition has increased, Walburn said the businesses will better benefit from the combination of the two stores.

The new store will offer the licensed clothing, hats and accessories along with shoes, name-brand athletic wear and sporting goods, which were typically sold only at Jock's Nitch.

Jock's Nitch is a small franchise with 13 stores in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri owned by Phil Minton of Pittsburg. Kansas Sports Club was the only non-Jock's Nitch sporting good store the company owned.

Walburn said the store will move into the former Kansas Sports Club store because the company owns the building.

But before opening in August, the manager said the store would undergo extensive remodeling. The going-out-of-business sale for Kansas Sports Club will be moved across the street to the current Jock's Nitch location, 840 Mass. The sale will be open from August to October.

Walburn said he would not have to reduce staff because of the store's closing.
