What is the proper pronunciation of Lied, as in the Lied Center at Kansas University?
The performing arts center on West Campus is named for Ernst Lied (pronounced as in leader), who attended Kansas University in the 1920s. He ran an automobile business in Omaha, Neb., for many years. In 1950, he moved to Las Vegas, where he had a real estate empire.
He established the Lied Foundation in 1980. Eight years ago, the foundation donated $10 million for construction of the Lied Center at KU.
In 1995, the foundation pledged $3.5 million to KU for biomedical research and performing arts.
