Wichita The Lawrence Journal-World's sports department swept the sports writing awards announced Friday at the 104th annual convention of the Kansas Press Assn.
Writer Andrew Hartsock won two first place awards, for sports writing and sports column writing, in a competition among the state's biggest newspapers. He also won an honorable mention in sports writing.
Gary Bedore took second place for sports writing, and sports editor Chuck Woodling third place. Woodling also won second place for sports feature writing.
Earl Richardson won first place for sports photography.
Overall, the Journal-World placed second for general excellence. The Topeka Capital-Journal won first place.
Staff writer Gwyn Mellinger won honorable mention for in-depth writing.
