— A celebration created by a group of cattlemen will offer visitors plenty of chances to hoof it this week.

A four-mile run, a two-mile fitness walk and two dances are among the attractions at the Eudora CPA Picnic, the annual party thrown by community of 3,322 people six miles east of Lawrence.

"If you've never been here before and you go down to Main Street, you're going to hear a lot of screaming and hollering from people having fun," said Jerry Trober, president of the event organizing committee.

Carnival rides, a children's parade and a grand parade highlight the three-day celebration, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday and ends with a concert Saturday night.

Proceeds from refreshments available at the carnival and a food stand will go to a nonprofit organization in Eudora.

Trober said the picnic drew about 800 people each night last year.

The '96 version will be much the same as those in the past, he said.

"There's basically the same things going on," he said. "I've been helping organize it for seven years, and it's the same all that time."

Tradition is part of the plan. Trober said the event started in 1904, when a group that had banded to guard against livestock theft decided to hold an annual get-together. The group's name: Cattlemen's Protection Assn.
