City employees received something extra in their paychecks Friday

Last year's review of salaries and benefits for city employees passed Friday with few changes to the city's payroll.

The city's 561 paychecks issued to full-time and year-round part-timers all included the annual 3 percent general wage adjustment approved by the Lawrence City Commission, said Karen DeGasperi Bryan, the city's personnel manager.

Seven entry-level positions received even higher raises to bring compensation for those jobs up to par with market rates, she said.

"We're keeping up pretty well," Bryan said. "We're paying competitively."

The study, by Ralph Andersen & Associates of Dallas, examined responsibilities, salaries and benefits for comparative jobs in private businesses and public organizations and governments.

Lawrence's municipal employees also received dental coverage this year, at no extra charge for individuals. Employees with family coverage pay an additional $10 a month.

Mayor Bob Moody said good benefits were important for retaining good workers.

"It's an opportunity to show employees that we really value their abilities," he said.

Salaries for the city's top administrators also are commensurate with pay for officials with similar responsibilities elsewhere, Bryan said.

City Manager Mike Wildgen's salary this year will be $94,708, also a 3 percent increase. Lawrence city commissioners formally will approve the raise Tuesday night.

Here's a rundown of current salaries for the city's other top employees, all of whom received the 3 percent general adjustment since the end of 1995:

Rod Bremby, assistant city manager, $77,792.

Roger Coffey, director of utilities, $74,519.

Ron Olin, police chief, $74,519.

George Williams, director of public works, $74,519.

Jim McSwain, fire chief, $74,486.

Lynn Goodell, director of housing and neighborhood development, $69,906.

Ed Mullins, finance director, $69,629.

Fred DeVictor, director of parks and recreation, $66,789.

Ray Hummert, city clerk/director of administrative services, $66,789.

Ray Samuel, director of human relations/human resources, $66,789.

Linda Finger, director of planning, $57,924.

David Corliss, director of legal services, $57,707.
