VALLEY VIEW DECISION EXPECTED IN MONTH

Two prospective tenants will be making their pitches for the vacant Valley View Care Home, 2518 Ridge Ct., later this month.

United Way of Douglas County envisions the 26,000-square-foot building as a complex for social service agencies. Hannah's House, an agency that assists teen mothers, would use the building as a group home for clients.

Douglas County commissioners will hear those proposals at their Jan. 29 meeting, which will be at 9 a.m. in the Douglas County Courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts.

Commissioners reserve the right to halt tenant selection if they decide during the next few weeks that a new health agency facility being built next to Lawrence Memorial Hospital won't address all the space needs.

Barring a delay related to that project, commissioners agreed to follow a schedule for selecting a tenant and negotiating a lease by the end of February.

Kansas Innovation Corp., which earlier had expressed interest in converting the building into a business incubator, has withdrawn from tenant selection. Jake Maczuga, KIC's director, said the task of leasing out and managing unused space in the building was too daunting.
