Law enforcement report

Burglaries and thefts reported

  • Johnny I's Used Cars, 814 Iowa, reported that between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a man took a 1988 Gray Saab for a test drive and failed to return it. The report indicates the suspect gave a false name and address on a form he filled out before taking the $7,000 car.
  • Car stereo equipment, 40 compact discs and other items valued together at $1,130 were stolen between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday from a 1989 Nissan pickup parked in the 900 block of Missouri. The police report indicates that a coat hangar may have been used to enter the vehicle.

Police reports

  • A 20-year-old Lawrence man reported that he was struck in the head several times about 3:45 p.m. Monday in the 2500 block of Iowa. The man said the suspect came up behind him and struck him about six times with an ice scraper. The victim said he did not know the reason for the attack. Witnesses told police they saw the victim arguing with the suspect but did not see the victim get struck. The victim reportedly sought hospital treatment, but no record of treatment could be found at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
  • Police are investigating a robbery that was reported about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Zarco 66 Station, 900 Iowa. The 33-year-old clerk told police that the suspect entered the business and demanded money. The clerk said that he went to a back room after the suspect made his demand and that the robber took $190 from the cash register. The clerk told police he believed the robber was armed, but no weapon was mentioned or displayed. The suspect was described as a black man in his 30s, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. He was wearing a black stocking cap, black gloves and a gray hooded sweatshirt.

Drug Enforcement Unit reports

  • A tip to the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Unit resulted in the arrest early Wednesday of two Lawrence men on drug charges. Mark E. Jenkins, 20, and Joshua M. Copp, 21, were arrested about 12:10 a.m. Wednesday after DEU officers served a search warrant at their residence, 837 Mich. During the search, the officers recovered about a half-pound of marijuana with an estimated street value of $900. Jenkins and Copp each were charged late Wednesday with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of the Kansas Drug Tax Stamp Act. Both are to appear back in court Feb. 8 for preliminary hearings.

Condition reports

  • Darren Anderson, 27, Kansas City, Mo., was listed in fair condition Wednesday at LMH, where he was taken after a sledding accident Saturday afternoon in Jefferson County.

Fire calls

Lawrence firefighters:

  • Were called at 6:29 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a reported smoke smell in an apartment on Brittany Place. Firefighters determined that the smoke alarms had been activated by smoke from cooking.
  • Were called at 2:43 a.m. Wednesday to investigate a carbon monoxide alarm in a residence at 3040 Yellowstone. Found no trace of carbon monoxide inside the residence.
  • Were called at 4:17 a.m. Wednesday to investigate a carbon monoxide alarm in a residence at 330 Mich. Found no trace of carbon monoxide in the residence. Determined that the battery in the detector was bad.

The Douglas County Ambulance Service reported the following responses:

  • Public accident, 10:21 p.m. Tuesday, 1700 block of Kent Terrace.
  • Medical emergency, 12:23 a.m. Wednesday, 100 block of Perry.
  • Medical emergency, 1:08 a.m. Wednesday, 1000 block of Orchard Lane, Baldwin.
  • Home accident, 2:59 a.m. Wednesday, 1600 block of Kentucky. No transport.
  • Aggravated battery, 4:02 a.m. Wednesday, 900 block of Louisiana. Patient was treated at LMH and released.

District court

Criminal charges filed

  • Nicole E. Spencer, 25, 2558 Redbud, recently was charged in Douglas County District Court with one count of aggravated battery. The charge stemmed from an altercation early Jan. 1 at The Yacht Club, 530 Wis., during which a 20-year-old Lawrence woman was struck in the head with a beer bottle.

Fire calls

Lawrence firefighters:

  • Were called at 7:59 a.m. Wednesday to a residence at 332 Locust that did not have power. Firefighters contacted KPL, the local electric company.
  • Washed away a small amount of gasoline at 9:06 a.m. Wednesday at Zarco Inc., 900 Iowa.
  • Investigated a false alarm at 5:01 p.m. Wednesday at LMH, 325 Maine.
  • Investigated a smoke report at 5:07 p.m. Wednesday in an apartment at 1408 W. 24th. Smoke from a fireplace on an upper floor was coming down a flue into the apartment, firefighters reported.

  • Home accident, 2 p.m. Wednesday, 1400 block of Kasold.
  • Medical emergency, 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, 1900 block of West 31st.
