United Way of Douglas County will have no competition during negotiations to lease the former Valley View Care Home, 2518 Ridge Ct.
On Monday, county commissioners asked County Administrator Craig Weinaug to begin negotiations with United Way for the 26,000-square-foot facility, which has been vacant since August.
United Way hopes to establish a social services campus in the building by leasing office space primarily to agencies that receive United Way funding. At least 15 agencies have said they would be interested in moving their operations into the building, where they could benefit from shared overhead and provide convenience to clients who use more than one agency.
Commissioners have said they want to see a lease that minimizes the county's ongoing obligation for maintenance of the building and places responsibility for renovation on the tenant. That has been an obstacle for other potential tenants.
United Way became the only contender for the facility when Hannah's House, an agency that provides services for unwed teen-age mothers, withdrew its proposal earlier this month. Kansas Innovation Center, which envisioned the building as a business incubator, also had backed out of the process.
