Chess teams at Quail Run School took first- and second-place trophies in the state Saturday at the first Lawrence High School Invitational Chess Tournament.
"I'm still walking on cloud nine," Harold Nelson, chess coach and counselor at Quail Run School, said Monday.
Nelson said Quail Run's A and B teams won first and second places in the elementary division of the statewide competition. The A team consists of 12 students in fourth through sixth grades. The B team consists of 12 students from kindergarten through grade three, he said.
Students winning individual medals were sixth-graders Kenneth Owens, Libby Ross and Matt Maness; fifth-graders Max Paley, Nat Twarog and Ronnie Arguaro; fourth-graders Jake Schneider, Jonathan Ross and Michael Biesiada; second-grader Nick Hubbard and first-grader Austin Meyers.
