Services for Verner L. Newman Jr., 88, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Newman died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996, at Colonial Manor.
He was born Nov. 16, 1908, in Leavenworth County, the son of Verner M. Newman Sr. and Nancy Smith Newman.
He worked as a concrete finisher and a cook. He opened his own plastering business from which he retired. He and his company were responsible for stuccoing the Teepee Junction in North Lawrence during the 1930s.
He was a member and 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason (Oread Lodge No. 12); Koran Shrine of Kansas City, Kan.; Chloe Green Chapter No. 12 Heroines of Jericho; Siloam Chapter No. 10 Order of the Easter Star; Royal Arch Knights Templar of Leavenworth; Hawks Men's Whist Social Club and St. James A.M.E. Church. He was also a 50-year member of the Western Star Masonic Lodge No. 1 A.F. & A.M., Lawrence, where he served as past master.
He married Rachel Gazell Gibson on Nov. 4, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo. She died Feb. 13, 1983. A son, William Walter, died in 1934.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen Smith, Topeka, and Charleen Coleman, Lawrence; two sons, Verner L. III and Charles, both of Lawrence; three brothers, Jesse Sr., Lawrence, Foster, Kansas City, Mo., and Leslie Sr., Topeka; two sisters, Rose Noches, Topeka, and Margaret Hill, Lawrence; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Friends may call after the service until 9 p.m. The family will greet friends until Friday evening at the home of Verner L. Newman III, 3916 Trail Rd.
The family suggests memorials to the Verner L. Newman Jr. Memorial Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
