A 27-year-old Lawrence man was charged with aggravated battery Wednesday after a fight in a northwest Lawrence bar and grill during which he allegedly hit his girlfriend in the face with a beer mug.

The 29-year-old Lawrence woman suffered lacerations to her right eye and lip, and possibly a broken nose, according to police reports. She was treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The incident occurred as a separate battery case -- with the same woman as the victim -- was pending against the suspect, Assistant Dist. Atty. Marlon Williams said.

Terence Hyche, 1549 E. 1000 Rd., was arrested about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after police were called to Henry T.'s, 3520 W. Sixth. According to police reports, Hyche approached officers and said, "I'm the one you're looking for, you may as well take me to jail."

The woman was attending a Christmas party at the business. Shortly after Hyche arrived, the two began arguing. Hyche allegedly swung at her with the mug, breaking the handle and the rim of the mug.

Hyche was being held Wednesday in Douglas County Jail on $3,000 bond. He will appear again in court Tuesday at a preliminary hearing concerning the most recent charge.

An aggravated battery conviction carries a maximum sentence of 23 months in incarceration.
