What is the purpose of Lawrence having sister cities in Germany and Japan?
Lawrence has sister cities in Eutin, Germany, and Hiratsuka, Japan, as a way to foster friendship, Faye Watson said. Watson is the chair of the Sister Cities Advisory Board.
"We chose those cities because they were looking for a sister city and we were looking for a sister city," she said. "We chose those cities because we have a lot in common with them."
Both cities send students to study in Lawrence as part of an exchange program. Lawrence students also travel to Germany and Japan on cultural and educational exchanges, Watson said.
In October, 45 firefighters from Eutin and their families visited Lawrence for a six-day interchange with the Lawrence Fire Department. The same month, 43 visitors from Hiratsuka visited and stayed with Lawrence residents on a cultural exchange.
"We feel like the only way to achieve world peace is by knowing each other," Watson said. "And the way to do this is through exchanges."
