A Lawrence man sustained serious injuries after colliding head-on with a car while riding a bicycle late Monday in North Lawrence.
Authorities said the accident occurred about 11:10 p.m. on the north end of the Kansas River Bridge.
Witnesses told authorities the bicyclist, identified as David Beust, Lawrence, was riding north across the bridge when he crossed into the southbound lane near or at the point where the bridge's median ends.
The man's head apparently went through the windshield of the Honda Accord bearing Minnesota license plates, officials said.
Beust appeared to be conscious and speaking with a Douglas County Ambulance Service supervisor before he was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
A helicopter had been called for him late Monday night and was scheduled to take him from LMH to the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
The driver of the car, at least one other passenger and a dog in the car were not seriously injured, police said.
