Douglas County commissioners agreed to pay Michael Treanor Architects $28,050 to design off-site improvements in conjunction with construction of the new county jail.
On Wednesday, commissioners said the additional fees would cover such services as design of utility extensions, road improvements and surveying.
Construction of the 196-bed facility, which will be built on a 22.4-acre site east of Lawrence off Kansas Highway 10, will begin later this year.
Fees for architectural and other professional services on the project will exceed $850,000. In addition to supplemental contracts such as the one approved Wednesday, the Treanor firm will receive a design fee equal to 6 percent of the cost of building the actual facility, which is tentatively estimated at $13.7 million.
