Basehor Greg Laffere powered Basehor-Linwood to a 17-3 victory over Tonganoxie on Friday.
When Greg Laffere gets a funny feeling, Tonganoxie needs to take cover.
Laffere intercepted a pass, recovered a blocked field-goal attempt and scored a touchdown in Basehor-Linwood's 17-3 victory Friday night at Kilster Field. The 6-6, 235-pound senior averaged 40.3 points per game against THS in three games last basketball season.
``I know in basketball, I have days that I feel I'm going to have a good game,'' Laffere said. ``Every time I play Tongie, I get that feeling. Tonight it was a forced deal. If we lost again, we might lose our season. Everybody had to play big and I just did my part.''
Tongie drops to 3-2 overall and in the Kaw Valley League, while Basehor improves to 4-1 overall, 3-1 in the KVL.
``For both sides, it was a good game,'' Tongie lineman Brian Kietzmann said. ``It's a tough loss, but we'll bounce back and win our district.''
The Bobcats outgained the Chieftains in total yards in the first half, 124-0. However, Basehor-Linwood only held a 10-0 halftime lead.
Basehor opened the second half with four fumbles in the third quarter, three inside its own 35. But Tongie mustered a field goal after the four turnovers to trail 10-3.
``We got set up in their territory, but didn't capitalize off their mistakes like we should have,'' Tongie coach Steve Hughes said.
Tongie had its own turnover woes with quarterback Nick Bogard throwing five interceptions in gusting winds. The biggest came at the BHS 13 with 6:40 left in the game. Bogard tried to lob a pass to running back Brad Calovich, but Laffere snatched the pass and ran 53 yards to the Tongie 37.
``(Bogard) pressed too much on offense, because we weren't getting many yards on the ground,'' Hughes said. ``It's tough, but I thought we could come back.''
After Tongie held Basehor, Bogard threw his fifth interception at the THS 35. The Bobcats attempted a 38-yard field goal with less than two minutes left, but the kick was blocked. Laffere picked up the loose ball and ran 21 yards for a first down to the THS 8. Two plays later, Laffere scored on a 1-yard run with 13 ticks left.
``We just didn't move the ball like we should have,'' Hughes said. ``We made a couple of errors and block a field goal and stand there and watch the ball roll around.''
Tongie's defense held Basehor to 67 second-half yards and produced five turnovers.
``Our defense was there,'' said Kietzmann, who had two fumble recoveries. ``We couldn't get our offense to click. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot.''
Tongie will entertain Baldwin next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Beatty Field.
