Good old-fashioned street hoops are being played this weekend for a cause other than simple competition.
About 75 teams have already signed up for "The Jayhawk Shootout," a three-on-three basketball tournament to raise money for Cottonwood Inc., which provides services to area people with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities.
The teams will take to the court -- the parking lot just south of the Judicial and Law Enforcement Building next to South Park -- beginning Saturday morning, said Carolyn Church, director of community relations and development for Cottonwood. The competition will take place from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Church said organizers hope to have at least 100 teams sign up for the event. The entry fee is $60 per team, and participants can still register from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Each team member gets a free T-shirt.
Should Mother Nature be uncooperative, Church said games may be delayed and participants should tune in to KLWN-1320 AM or KLZR-105.9 FM radio for announcements.
