Members of the Lawrence school board will meet for six hours Monday in an effort to determine their common areas of interest.
The gathering will be from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Kansas University's Adams Alumni Center, 1266 Oread Ave.
Board President John Tacha said the retreat will allow the seven board members a chance to talk informally about their interests and see how those relate to the board's standing committees. The board, which has three new members, also will discuss "boardsmanship," which Tacha defined as how members react to one another and how they react to the public.
"Boardsmanship, I think, means that you're dealing with six other people who don't always have the same opinion you do, but you need to get on down the road after the decision," Tacha said.
Max Heim, who is superintendent of schools in Lyons, will facilitate the retreat. Heim is a former Kansas University professor of educational policy and leadership.
Tacha said the board also will discuss long-range planning and policy issues.
